Assignments and quizzes in the LMS

Set assignments with a due date and marks, grade what students submit, and run timed online quizzes with results and per-question analytics.

The LMS lets you set work online. Assignments are tasks students submit by a due date. Quizzes are timed tests students take in their portal, marked as they go. Use them for homework, practice and short assessments.

Before you start

  • Classes and subjects must be set up, and students need portal logins.
  • You need access to the LMS menu. If you do not see this option, it may not be included in your plan or your role may not have permission; ask your administrator.
  • To reuse questions, build them first in the subject's Question Bank under Curriculum > Subjects.

Steps

Set an assignment

  1. Go to LMS > Assignments.
  2. Select the class and subject, then click Add Assignment.
  3. Enter the Assignment Title, a brief with instructions, the Due Date and the Total Marks. Attach a file if students need one.
  4. Save. Students see it under Assignments in their portal and use Submit to hand in their work.

Grade submissions

  1. Open the assignment and view its Submissions. Late work is marked as late.
  2. Click Grade Submission, enter the marks, set the status to Accepted or Rejected, and add Feedback for the student.
  3. Save. The student sees the marks and feedback in their portal.

Run a quiz

  1. Go to LMS > Quizzes and click Add Quiz.
  2. Enter the Quiz Name, choose the class and subject, and set when it Opens and Closes and the Duration (minutes). Add instructions for students.
  3. Open the quiz and add questions with Add Question, or use Import from Question Bank to pull questions you already built for that subject.
  4. Students find it under Quizzes in their portal and click Attempt once it opens. If they leave part way, they can Resume while time remains.
  5. After it closes, open the quiz to see Results and Analytics: attempts, average, highest and lowest score, and how each question performed.

Good to know

  • A student can only attempt a quiz between its open and close times.
  • Per-question performance shows which questions most students got wrong. That is often the quickest way to spot a topic to reteach.
  • Assignments and quizzes are set per subject, so a teacher only works with the subjects assigned to them.
  • Assignments and quizzes can be switched on separately. If students do not see one of them in their portal, it may not be included in your plan.

Common questions

Can I reuse a quiz next term?
Questions live in the subject's question bank and can be imported again into a new quiz.

Can I print submissions or results?
Yes, the submissions and results screens have a print option.
