Setting up grading schemes
Create grading scales and their grade bands, add divisions, and choose which scale each exam uses.
A grading scale decides how a mark or percentage becomes a grade, and optionally grade points. Set your scales up once, before your first exam, and every exam can then use them.
Before you start
- You need access to Examination > Settings. This is usually an administrator or exam office task. If you do not see this option, it may not be included in your plan or your role may not have permission; ask your administrator.
- Have your board's or school's grading chart to hand: each grade and the percentage range it covers.
Steps
Quick start from your exam system
- Go to Examination > Settings and open the Import Exam Systems tab.
- Pick the board or curriculum your campus follows and preview the import. It lists what will be added, then creates the grading scale, grade bands, divisions, exam types, components and report card settings for that system.
- Review what was created on each tab and adjust it to your school's rules.
Create a scale yourself
- Go to Examination > Settings > Grading Scales and add a grading scale.
- Enter a Name and choose the Type: Grade (letter), GPA / grade points, Rubric, Pass / Fail or Descriptor.
- Choose Lookup by: Percentage, Absolute marks or Direct grade (the teacher picks the grade).
- For a GPA scale, enter the Max points (GPA). Set Default to Yes if this is the scale most exams should use. Save.
- Open the scale's Grade Bands. For each band, enter the Grade, Min % and Max % (or Min Marks and Max Marks), the Points, whether it is a Pass or Fail, and an optional Descriptor such as Excellent. Click Save after each band.
Add divisions (optional)
- On the Divisions tab, add a division with its Division label (for example, First Division) and Minimum %.
- Link it to one Grading scale, or leave it on All scales (campus-wide).
Use the scale on an exam
- When you create or edit an exam under Examination > Exams, pick the scale in Grading scale. Leaving it on Default uses your default scale.
Good to know
- Make sure the bands cover the whole range from 0 to 100 with no gaps or overlaps. A percentage that falls in a gap will not get a grade.
- The General tab in Settings holds the result rules, such as how absences and failed subjects affect the overall result.
- Remarks that appear automatically by percentage range are set on the Remarks tab.
- Grade points from the scale feed GPA and CGPA. Check the scale before results are computed; if you change it afterwards, recompute the results.
- Behaviour ratings use their own rating scales under Behaviour Traits and do not affect grades or rank.
Common questions
Can different classes use different scales?
Yes. The scale is chosen per exam, so you can create, for example, a junior scale and a senior scale and pick the right one for each exam.
