Marking daily student attendance
Load a class for a date, mark each student present, absent, late, on leave or short leave, and use bulk actions to save time.
Daily attendance records one status per student per day. You can mark it from the admin panel for any class, or teachers can mark their own classes from the staff portal. Do this every school day, ideally in the first period.
Before you start
- Classes and sections must exist, and students must be admitted and active in them.
- You need permission to view and edit student attendance. Teachers marking from the staff portal see only the classes assigned to them.
- Holidays should be in the Holiday Calendar, so nobody marks a closed day by mistake.
If you do not see this option, it may not be included in your plan or your role may not have permission; ask your administrator.
Steps
From the admin panel
- Go to Attendance > Student Attendance. If your institution also takes course attendance, choose Daily Attendance under it.
- Under Fetch Students for Attendance, choose the Branch, Class and Section (or Batch, Program and Semester if you run semesters).
- Pick the date and click Load. The student list appears with each student's current status.
- Click Present, Absent, Short Leave, Leave or Late next to each student. The status badge updates as you go.
- To save time, open Mark All Attendance and choose All Present, then change only the exceptions.
- To change several students at once, select them with the checkboxes and use Mark Absent, Mark Late, Mark Short Leave, Mark Leave or Mark Present.
From the staff portal
- Log in to the staff portal and open Mark Attendance.
- Select the class and section, then click Load.
- Mark each student, or use Mark All Attendance and adjust the exceptions.
Good to know
- No future dates. Attendance cannot be marked for a date that has not happened yet.
- Locked months. If an administrator has locked a month, nobody can change attendance in it until it is unlocked.
- Earlier dates in the staff portal. Teachers may only be able to mark today. Whether they can pick an earlier date depends on your institution's settings.
- Approved leave. When a leave request is approved, those days show as leave, so you do not need to mark them by hand.
- Importing past records. Mark All Attendance > Import Attendance takes an Excel or CSV file of historical attendance. Rows for unknown students, future dates, locked months or holidays are skipped.
- Automatic absence. If your administrator has switched on auto absent in Attendance Settings, anyone still unmarked at the set time is marked absent.
Common questions
What is the difference between Short Leave and Leave?
Schools usually use Short Leave when a student attends part of the day, for example leaving early with permission, and Leave for an authorised absence. Agree how your institution uses each so every teacher marks them the same way.
I marked the wrong status. What now?
For today, click the correct status again. For an older or locked date, use a correction request instead.
